Will I lose my supply if I try to lose weight?

If you do not engage in any drastic crash diets, you should not lose your supply while navigating weight loss while breastfeeding. There are few things you need to focus on while breastfeeding in order to stay energized, fuel yourself and your baby. so let me share that with you.

1. Whole Foods

You must eat, enough, quality whole foods to ensure your body acan do what it is meant to do. Focusing on whole foods, think (from the ground or has a mother) and less processed foods. The less processed you eat, the better your body absorbs the nutrients from the whole foods. As it was designed!

2. Fill Your Macro Buckets

Eating the right amounts of each macro is essential to weightloss & breastfeeding supply. Your maro’s are your protiens, fats & carbohydrates. You want to be sure you have the right percentage of each one in order to support your needs. This is different for everyone so don’t do what Sally Sue is doing because it won’t be what your body needs!

Using the PLATE IT system is really helpful for breastfeeding moms’ you can read more about this here.

3. Hydrate

Water is SO important for your body and is one of the main factors for keeping a solid milk supply. Think liquid in equals liquid out. Drink 8-12 ounces of water upon waking, and every time your breastfeed or pump. Even during the night. Let me know if you notice any changes when you try this.

4. do not over exercise

You do not need to do endless amounts of cardio to lose weight. Yes, the media is going to make this seem like you have too, but you do not. In fact, if you focus soley on your nutrition you can focus on your core healing which is the most important thing to focus on those initial 3-6months postpartum.

As a breastfeeding mom you want to focus on body composition vs actual weight loss. so focusing on nutrition will give you the best results over time.

5. Rest & Recover

For many moms this is really hard to do! We tend to focus on more is better and more will get us our results.

In this case, LESS IS MORE. If you didn’t sleep well, its OK to rest. Feeling really sore or baby was up all night nursing  in clusters? Focus on nutrition and rest momma.

Focus on low impact stretching, yoga and pilates during this season, your body will love you so much for it. If most days all you can get is 10 minutes, that is GREAT. This does not mean you have failed ; this is called consistency.

Conclusion

How to lose weight while breastfeeding? Follow these steps laid out and it is possible to lose weight while breastfeeding. You do not have to do endless amounts of cardio & dieting to see progress. You must focus on 1. Whole foods, 2. Macros, 3. Hydration, 4. the right balance of cardio and strength & taking the time to rest, recover & heal!
