Why Is my Hair Falling Out After Baby?

July 23, 2019 by Coach Kaitlin Leave a Comment

3 Months Postpartum, in shower washing hair; look down at hand and you realize you have a HANDFULL of your hair…AHHH. You look in mirror and notice bald spots in your temple area…AHHHHHHH…

Immediatly types into google:
“why is my hair falling out after baby?”

Sound familiar?! I can relate! In this post I will share:

  • why postpartum hair loss happens aka Why is my hair falling out after baby?!
  • 6 steps to continue hcalthy hair growth
  • and a few of the items that will support you in this journey.

Why does postpartum hair loss happen?

During pregnancy you may have noticed some hair changes, maybe thicker, maybe you added some curl or some curl went away. Typically for any human being 85-90% of your hair is in a growth phase at any point in time.

During pregnancy, due to hormonal changes in your estrogen and progesterone levels an increase in the amount of hairs in your growth phase takes place. Which results in many women experiencing thickened hair during pregnancy. There are MORE hairs growing and fewer in the resting/shedding phase.

Postpartum hair loss is a normal –(hair falling out after baby)- and temporary –postpartum change that is unrelated to breastfeeding.

Most women will return to their usual hair growth cycle between 6 and 12 months after birth, but not everyone will develop their old hair growth patterns. … During telogen, the resting hair phase,  hair remains in the follicle until it is pushed out by the growth of a new hair follicle.

Why is my hair falling out so much after having a baby?

You may notice an increase in hair shedding during the third month postpartum. Typically during the 3rd postpartum month the majority of women will start to experience an extreme amount of hair loss and notice possible balding spots.

This is happening because as mentioned above the hair is no longer in the telogen phase of hair growth. Excessive hair loss that continues after 12 months postpartum can be a sign that your hormones are still unbalanced which could be a hypothyroidism issue or iron-deficiency anemia. Be sure to check with your doctor if you feel you may suffer from any of these issues.

How can I regrow my hair after pregnancy?

Regrowth happens to everyone a bit differently. It also will depend on your health, what you put into your body and what you put on your body. A few things you should be doing to support healthy hair growth during the postpartum period:

  1. Continue to take your prenatal supplement(s). Your body is still working extremely hard to nourish your little one and your body is healing!
  2. Take a collagen supplement, this will support healthy hair growth, & nourish your skin also.
  3. Take Fish Oil, or some form of Omega 3 to be sure your body is getting an adequate supply of healthy fats.
  4. Find a postpartum hair loss shampoo that will support healthy hair regrowth and that has minimal toxic ingredients.
  5. Eat a whole foods diet rich in protein, fats, veggies, & fruits.
  6. Do a bi-weekly oil treatment on your scalp, healthy scalp means healthy hair!

Will postpartum hair loss grow back?

As a new mom experiencing post pregnancy hair loss, or bald spots can be stressful. Adding it onto your list of things as a new mother is a bit overwhelming. Eventually your hair should grow back, however there are instances for some women who do not have such luck; this is different for everyone.

Your health will impact the time it takes for regrowth to take place. As mentioned in the previous paragraph there are 6 simple ways you can support your hair growth.

In Conclusion:

Postpartum hairloss happens to everyone. It is the extent to how much hair is lost that varies.  You do not have to just ‘deal’ with it. There are ways to support your body in creating a healthy hair growth environement.

You can start with the simple 6 steps I provided above. If those do not help reach out to your doctor and see if there are any other treatments they may approve of.
