When I think of my HOME and contamination in it I think of all our cleaning products. There seems to be a million and one different cleaning products from your kitchen counter-top, to your sink, to the floor, the bathroom, the laundry room! There are just SO many options! Think about walking down the cleaning isle in the grocery store…its wall to wall products for every possible sticky situation. So one would assume all is OK to use right?
NEWSFLASH: 97% of it is NOT SAFE FRIENDS!
The EWG’s investigation of more than 2,000 cleaning supplies on the American market found that many household cleaners contain substances linked to serious health problems.
- Problems such as the fumes can induce asthma or respiratory problems.
- That the products we use daily are laced with carcinogens and dioxane and formaldehyde!
- That children who held cleaning jobs during pregnancy have elevated risks of birth defects according to a study by NYS Department of Health
- That cleaners can cause chemical burns and poisonings! Think how many of your cleaning products state: KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN!
DESPITE all these health concerns, the labels are NOT giving us consumers enough information about the ingredients for us to make informed decisions based on what we want in our house and what we don’t.
Government agencies and research institutions have not properly evaluated the safety of numerous substances found in cleaning products!
- 2.Toxic chemicals are easily absorbed through the skin and can even find their way into the bloodstream. It only takes 30 seconds for something to absorb through your skin into your bloodstream.
Beauty products. Anything that comes into contact with your skin such as shampoo, conditioner, bodywash, soap, lotion, perfume, face lotions/creams/mask, hand creams, sunscreens, deodorants…you get the idea right?! 30 seconds or LESS! Yikes! I had NO idea
The issue with our everyday, over the counter products is that advertising really makes us believe that a product is ‘safe’. Just because something states “all natural” or “toxin-free” does NOT mean that it is! You have to be proactive, and start learning what ingredients are toxic and which ones are not. Unfortunately the United States allows over 3,000 different chemicals to be put INTO those beauty products that are claiming to be safe. They disclose many toxins under the word ‘fragrance’. It is the FDA’s way of ignoring the fact that these products are harmful to our bodies and mess up our endocrine system. - 3.Non-toxic products are better for the environment.–
You have to remember where those products go AFTER they leave your body. They are either soaking into your bloodstream affecting your body, or being washed down the drain affecting our water sources, marine life, farm fields and landfills.
Clean drinking water seems to be more of an issue everyday. Schools are affected, towns are affected and it’s sad to think we have brought this upon ourselves because we didn’t know!
Marine life and farm fields become intoxicated by these chemicals which directly affects the foods that we eat. Landfills begin to fill up with gasses which pollute the air we breathe and our water resources too.
Now, it can be very overwhelming to process all of this, and I ignored it for a very long time. It is important to understand that even small changes on our part such as choosing safer products can have a large effect on our health and the health of others.
